EDM Expertise: MEP Division Spotlight

July 20th, 2022

"We listen. We care. We create."
EDM’s mantra has somewhat of a double meaning for the Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing (MEP) division. Of course, they’re busy engineering solutions that help clients turn visions into reality on a daily basis, but they’re also creating something pretty cool within our own four walls — a bright future. And it’s all thanks to a teaching mindset.
A Solid Foundation

When it was founded in 1988, EDM originated with the goal of providing industrial engineering support services to major electrical conglomerates. As that vision evolved, the team expanded to include architectural design. In 2015, building systems engineering completed the trifecta to offer completely unified and comprehensive solutions. Since then, the MEP team has grown to 9 employees — including both licensed electrical and mechanical engineers, and a team of designers — ranging from 3 years of experience to 30+.

Together, the team provides engineering design and support for renovations and new construction, as well as on an on-call basis. Today, this is split 60/40 between independent work and that in support of an architectural team. “We can come into a project at any point in the process to help with mechanical, electrical, or plumbing needs and fire protection,” Bob Sherman, MEP Manager, explained. “Whether we’re being asked to support a structural and architectural team or simply replacing a boiler unit, our reputation extends beyond providing quality service at a fair price. Clients know that we truly listen to them to advise them on their unique needs.”

Many of the division’s projects fall within government contracts and school systems, but on-call jobs extend the team’s experience into different sectors, from commercial to multi-unit housing and more. “Having experience in a number of areas benefits us in multiple ways. It makes us a more valuable partner to clients and provides an opportunity to prioritize the development of newer employees,” Bob said. “Our goal is to ensure that everyone on the team can deliver the same level of quality and offer the best solutions. We hear from clients all the time that no matter when they call and who picks up the phone, they know they can get the answers they need — from our CEO down to our newest designers.”

Fueling Growth with a Teaching Mentality

“From my perspective, it's pretty amazing,” Bob said. “I love watching our younger team members grow and become leaders themselves."

For MEP, this teamwork isn’t only driving a better client experience — it’s also igniting the division's growth. Having a team with a wide variety of experiences and different backgrounds is a unique advantage as the company continues to evolve. "We have an engineer mentoring other engineers on the team, we're committed to sharing information and finding teaching moments whenever we can. This type of learning environment is a powerful thing in terms of growth -- and because of the range of people we have in our division, we have the opportunity to do it.”

According to Bob, the fact that the MEP team is such an awesome group of individuals only makes this type of collaboration that much easier. “These are truly the best people I’ve ever worked with," he noted. "There’s such a broad range of experience within our team, and everyone is willing to work together and support each other to get the job done. Together, we succeed as a team — and this allows us to deliver the best possible service to our customers.”

On The Horizon

With a wide range of experience and projects in their repertoire, MEP’s growth is not only exciting — it’s inevitable. As Bob puts it: we’re growing to grow. “As a labor-based team, we need more people who can do the work to fulfill more jobs and bring on new projects. We’re staying at the forefront of new solutions and technology to be a team that people want to be part of as they begin their careers. It’ll be exciting to see where it takes us.”
