University of Connecticut - Whitney Dining Hall

Overview

EDM provided engineering services for this 5,000 SF renovation of a university dining facility, focused on serving local farm-to-table fare and designed to recall a Farmer’s Market. At its center, a broad new skylight enlivens the space with daylight. An elongated community table, made from natural hickory, and variety of table and seating options extend under the new skylight. Various food serving stations and a grill surround the open seating area. “Market lights” under the skylight extend the ambiance into the evening hours. A living “green” wall shelters the dishwashing station from the main dining area. An adjacent underutilized study space was transformed into a comfortable, casual café space, offering additional soft seating options and a gas-fired fireplace.
