The Pingry School, Lower School Modernization

Short Hills, NJ

Overview

(For Lower School Phase 1): As follow-up to a school-wide Facilities Master Plan developed by edm, this Phase 1 project implemented at Pingry’s Lower School includes relocation and complete reconfiguration of classrooms, creating new Grade 3/4 and new Kindergarten neighborhoods each with their own central learning commons space. Two wings were joined by a new addition to solve the need for increased space on a very tight site. Learning Commons, while internally oriented are daylight with raised clerestory windows. Project includes new updates finishes throughout, integrated technology and daylight control.

(For overall Lower School work) This project included programming, master planning, reconfiguration of classrooms, and creation of new grade neighborhoods with shared Learning Commons – all in response to 21st Century learning trends. Project features included new finishes throughout, integrated technology, daylight harvesting and mobile/flexible furnishings. Specific challenges included tight site restrictions and design/construction phasing spanning over a two year period, while maintaining full occupancy.
