Monterey Library

Monterey, MA

Overview

edm conducted a study and designed a renovation and new extension for the Town of Monterey Library. The building was constructed in 1931, and has both historically and currently serves as a focal meeting place for the Town. The new library acts as a gathering place for the community, and features a 60% larger multipurpose room, a large reading deck overlooking the Konkapot River, quiet study spaces, and dedicated areas for children and teens. edm designed flexible spaces within the library to adapt to various needs of the community, including mobile/reconfigurable shelving that allows rooms to be easily rearranged based on its use.

The design of the renovation aimed to maintain the original library structure and tie into the nature of the site and the river. Renovation work made the library fully accessible to all with accessible up-to-code bathrooms. Structural improvements include a new roof, a dry basement, insulation, energy-efficient mechanical systems and lighting, increased capacity, and updating/improving mostly hidden structural details.
