MCLA Fitness Center

North Adams, MA

Overview

At the Amsler Campus Center, edm partnered with MCLA on the repurposing of the existing pool area that had been under utilized for years, and infilled the pool to create a new fitness center and athletic training/teaching area and inserted a two-lane running track at the upper level of the existing two-story space.

During the design, edm and MCLA identified another area for program expansion within the existing building, which resulted in the placement of a new floor structure between the masonry walls of two existing squash courts which were not in use. The new floor deck gained almost 1,500 SF of future program area, at minimal initial cost. Once the new floor deck was installed, MCLA recognized the immediate value of the additional available program space and edm designed two large meeting/classrooms into this bonus space.

New lighting and associated controls were included in this renovation. Lighting consisted of energy efficient LED fixtures with a centralized lighting control system. Lights were programmed on a time-of-day schedule and local controls consisted of dimmable switches and occupancy vacancy sensors. The centralized system provided the ability to monitor energy usage and provide data to their building management system.
