Conte Building VA Clinic

Pittsfield, MA

Overview

edm provided architecture and engineering services for the VA Clinic in the Silvio O. Conte Federal Building in Pittsfield, MA. Services included HVAC controls, automation, and building infrastructure for the VA outpatient clinic. The new clinic more than doubles the patient capacity of the former location, where for more than 20 years, staff were challenged to get the most out of the unique, but limiting, triangular design of the clinic’s building.

With this project, we set out to create a facility that “feels like home” in that it is warm and welcoming and reduces — rather than adds to — the stress often associated with clinic visits. The design ensures that patients always know where they are, how to get where they need to go, and don’t have to move too often.

The adaptive-reuse renovation of the second floor to serve as the clinic’s new home is both an aesthetic and functional update to the former site. The state-of-the-art facility ably supports successful implementation of the VA’s new patient-aligned care standards being implemented nationwide. Exam rooms are spacious and comfortable, and sliding doors make entry and egress easier and safer for patients — especially those with limited mobility or who use a wheelchair or a walker.

The clinic features dedicated telehealth spaces for providers equipped with tools and technology to support basic healthcare services and have the potential to support dermatology, cardiology, endocrinology, and other specialties that currently require patients to travel 140 miles to Boston to receive. The new clinic also includes a dedicated wing for mental health care providers and hosts two new lab spaces.
