EDM AE Student Outreach

June 2nd, 2022

At EDM, we always have an eye towards the future. We apply that not only to the work we do but also in the way we look to support the next generation of architects, designers, and engineers.

Giving back to our communities is important to us, and doing what we can for the students in the areas where we live and work is one of our favorite ways to help others. So when Charles H. McCann Technical High School in North Adams, Massachusetts reached out to us seeking assistance in providing mock interviews for sophomore students in the school’s CAD program, Mechanical Designer Sam Daniels jumped at the opportunity.

McCann Tech is just about 20 miles from our Pittsfield office, where Sam helped prepare these students for future job opportunities by getting them comfortable with the basic flow of an interview. This opportunity was last offered prior to the pandemic, and we were excited to have been able to be a part of its return on May 25th.

EDM has a history of providing this type of support. Structural Engineer Samantha Eaton, through a friend’s family member, was asked to join a panel of young engineers at The Academy at Penguin Hall to discuss women in STEM fields. Samantha was able to share details regarding the path she took in college and what led her to a career in engineering with the APH community.

Architect Tim Widman, joined by Director of Business Development Amy Ray, returned to Simsbury High School nearly 20 years after he graduated to meet with sophomore, junior, and senior students in the Architecture program. Tim’s focus was to give students an overview of his career, including the preparation and training he underwent in college.

We look forward to more of these opportunities in the future. We learn just as much from these students as they learn from us, and these sorts of engagements allow us to keep our roots close to heart and give perspective to how far we’ve come.
